About the Program

Eastman Beginning Strings is the place for all beginning string students age 12 and under and covers curricular levels one through three.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are the centerpiece of our program, and are offered in violin, viola, cello and bass. Students typically start anywhere between age four and nine, and complete levels one through three by age 12. They may choose from a wide range of teachers, from “interns” (talented Eastman collegiate students or graduates) to “instructors” (professional artist-educators).

Group Classes

At the teacher’s recommendation, students may join a group class with others of the same instrument/level. These classes focus on techniques specific to the instrument (currently offering classes in violin and cello), and also may include some ensemble playing.

EBS Tutti & EBS Camerata

In addition to group classes of the same instrument, EBS also offers Tutti and Camerata. These are combined instrument groups designed to develop basic elements of orchestral ensemble playing in a fun and supportive environment.

Students typically participate in a performance exam in the spring to receive encouragement and feedback from other faculty.

Students have the opportunity to perform in dedicated EBS recitals in the Winter and Spring festivals. These are fun and relaxed events that enable students to connect with and support one another, celebrating their hard work and achievement through music-making and a post-concert party!

Students may also perform on any prescheduled ECMS recital. These are available nearly every week throughout the year in Kilbourn, Hatch and Howard Hanson Halls. Accompanying services for these recitals are included in the tuition, and are provided through the ECMS office.
